Para Normal Investigations

A Paranormal Investigator (PI) is a person who investigates claims regarding the presence of ghosts, demons, spirits, aliens, lake monsters, the chupacabra, and other "strange and bizarre" things. (The Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena (ASSAP) lists 45 subjects for investigation. The Skeptic's DictionaryParanormal Topics page lists over 50 subjects.) The paranormal investigator should be distinguished from the parapsychologist or laboratory researcher of psi, although some paranormal investigators also do lab work.

Field and house PI's

Some PIs are field PIs. Some are "house" PIs. The field PI goes on site to investigate. The house PI reads the reports of field PIs, but does not travel to the site of weird phenomena.

True Believers, Deniers, and the Role of Debunking

In paranormal investigations, people who accept or reject claims without conducting research or reviewing evidence are often labeled incorrectly. Those who accept paranormal claims without investigation are commonly called “true believers.” On the other hand, people who reject such claims without investigation are better described as “paranormal deniers,” not debunkers. True debunking involves actively investigating claims and exposing false explanations through evidence, which is a legitimate and important part of a paranormal investigator’s (PI’s) work. Debunking typically happens after field investigations or careful analysis of reports, not through simple denial.

Scientific Paranormal Investigation

A scientific paranormal investigator approaches cases with an open and neutral mindset, focusing on evidence rather than belief. The goal is not to prove or disprove ghosts, monsters, or paranormal activity, but to understand the causes behind unusual experiences. Scientific PIs collect data, consider multiple hypotheses, and try to falsify explanations to avoid confirmation bias. Unlike entertainment-driven “ghost hunting,” true paranormal research prioritizes methodical investigation, critical thinking, and skepticism grounded in science rather than fame, fear, or assumptions.
